What is Down syndrome ?
Down syndrome is the name given to the combination of characteristics noted in individuals who have this condition. It is caused by the presence of extra genetic material that alters the course of the individual's development. There are a quarter million children and adults with Down syndrome living in the United States today, making it the most prevalent developmental condition.
While Down syndrome is usually associated with some degree of delay in development, new research, education programs, legislation, vigorous national organizations, and many local organizations together serve to re-define the potential of individuals with Down syndrome in a manner unprecedented in the history of science and education.
